PADANG, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province erupted Sunday, spewing white-and-gray ash plumes more than 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) into the air and sending hot ash clouds several miles away. There were no immediate report of casualties, said Ahmad Rifandi, an official with Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center at the Marapi monitoring post. The two routes for climbers were closed after the eruption and villagers living on the slopes of the mountain were advised to stay 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the crater’s mouth because of potential lava.About 70 climbers started their way up the nearly 2,900-meter (9,480-foot) mountain on Saturday and became stranded. So far, 28 have been successfully evacuated with the rest still awaiting rescue, said Dian Indriati, the acting head of North Sumatra’s conservation agency.A video on social media shows the climbers were evacuated to a shelter, their faces and hair smeared with volcanic dust...The Pentagon says an American warship and multiple commercial vessels have come under attack in the Red Sea

Police have identified the driver who, they said, was taken to the hospital following an officer-involved shooting in Northwest Miami-Dade and have confirmed a second arrest, as more details of the incident that also left an officer injured come to light.According to Miami-Dade Police, what started with an attempted routine traffic stop ended with shots fired in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 64th Street, Friday evening.Investigators said an officer attempted to pull over 38-year-old Virgil French, who was behind the wheel of a white Dodge Challenger, but the motorist refused to stop, eventually hitting an electric pole.Speaking with reporters Friday night, MDPD Detective Luis Sierra, said the suspect used the car to injure an officer.“Our officers quickly assessed and attempted to make contact. The subject accelerated toward one of our officers, striking him and pinning him against his own vehicle,” said MDPD Detective Luis Sierra. “Our officer discharged his firearm, striki...Another coyote spotted in Pembroke Pines amid increase in sightings across Broward

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An American warship and multiple commercial ships came under attack Sunday in the Red Sea, the Pentagon said. Yemen’s Houthi rebels later claimed attacks on two ships they described as being linked to Israel, but did not acknowledge targeting a U.S. Navy vessel. The attack potentially marked a major escalation in a series of maritime attacks in the Mideast linked to the Israel-Hamas war.“We’re aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Pentagon told The Associated Press. The Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. It remained unclear what damage, if any, the vessels sustained in the attacks. The British military earlier said there had been a suspected drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea, without elaborating. The Pentagon did not identify where it believed the fire came from. However, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree clai...Thousands of climate change activists hold boisterous protest march in Brussels with serious message

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — Thousands of people marched through the center of Brussels on Sunday in a boisterous rally highlighting the dangers of climate change, as the COP28 climate summit draws to an end in Dubai.“We must save our planet. It’s the only one where there’s beer,” read one sign at the head of the parade, led by a brass band. But the message of the Great Climate March was serious: Act now to stop the world from destroying itself. The activists of Climate Coalition called for politicians to put in place stronger measures to counter global warming. One man bundled against the cold, Luc Durnez, complained that the Belgian government went to the climate summit “without a plan, and it is really a shame for us.”In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, nations were promising measures to slash the world’s greenhouse emissions by nearly half in seven years to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) compared with pre-industrial times. But marchers in Brussels com...An Israeli raced to confront Palestinian attackers. He was then killed by an Israeli soldier

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Seconds after Palestinian gunmen began shooting up a busy Jerusalem bus stop last week, Yuval Castleman raced toward the scene and opened fire on the attackers — only to be shot and killed by an Israeli soldier who apparently suspected he was also an assailant. The shooting of Castleman, who in security camera footage is seen kneeling, raising his hands and flinging open his shirt to indicate he isn’t a threat, underscores what critics say is an epidemic of excessive force by Israeli soldiers, police and armed citizens against suspected Palestinian attackers.“He took all the necessary steps so that he could be properly identified,” Castleman’s father, Moshe, told Israeli Army Radio on Sunday, “and they kept shooting at him.”Castleman’s shooting mirrors previous incidents where Israeli security forces or civilians have opened fire on attackers who no longer appear to pose a threat, or on suspected assailants or unarmed civilians deemed to be threats. The incid...Latest news
