Mike Preston’s Ravens mailbag: Answering questions about Ronnie Stanley, offseason priorities and more | COMMENTARY

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:41:56 GMT

Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston will answer fans’ questions throughout the Ravens season. Coming off Baltimore’s 20-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 12, plenty of questions remain heading into their bye week. Here’s Preston’s take:(Editor’s note: Questions have been edited for length and clarity.)Justin Tucker is having one of his worst seasons since 2015. You can see it in his eyes and demeanor when he goes to kick. It doesn’t help that he has had a number of kicks blocked. What do you think the special teams coaches need to do to help him get his head back in the game? — Adam PanareseI I don’t have a problem with Tucker. The kicks he has had blocked were because of a missed blocking assignment and another attempt was about 55 yards, and a lot of those get blocked around the league because there has to be a low trajectory to get the distance. If Tucker misses a field goal every now and then, I have no problem with it. ...

State Sen. Peter Durant’s victory earlier this month in a special Senate election “affirmatively answers” the question of whether or not Republican campaigns are viable in Massachusetts, the top Senate Republican said minutes before Durant was sworn into his new role.Durant handily beat Rep. Jonathan Zlotnik, a Gardner Democrat, by more than 2,000 votes in an election for a Central Massachusetts Senate seat last held by Sen. Anne Gobi, who left the Legislature for a job in the Healey administration.Massachusetts Republicans viewed the district as their best chance to add to their three-member caucus in the 40-member Senate, and have gone on a victory parade of sorts since Durant’s win.“He has proven that the ideals that we share, the principles that we stand for are viable in Massachusetts, and the voters in his district spoke loud and clear about that,” Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr told reporters before Gov. Maui County said it placed 40 pallets of straw barriers around Lahaina and that 25 staff members were on standby. Earlier this week, county staff inspected and cleared culverts in flood-prone parts of Kula and South Maui. DALLAS (AP) — The air traffic controller on duty when FedEx and Southwest planes nearly collided earlier this year in Texas told investigators that he expected the airliner to take off more quickly — before the incoming FedEx plane reached the same runway. That is because in his four years working the tower at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the controller said, Southwest planes usually took off as soon as they got permission.“But hindsight being 20/20,” controller Damian Campbell told investigators, he “definitely could have held them,” referring to making the Southwest crew wait.Campbell said in a transcript released Wednesday that he couldn’t even see the Southwest plane through the dense early morning fog on Feb. 4. The FedEx pilots spotted it at the last second and aborted their landing. The planes missed each other by about 100 feet (30 meters). The National Transportation Safety Board released transcripts of interviews and other details of its investigation but di...
