ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The asylees recently arriving in upstate New York were promised housing, medical services, and other aid but some of those promises are falling flat.  New York lawmakers continue to chip away at the many legal barriers keeping migrants from finding work. Asylees in Albany want work, not a handout Many state and local officials like Colonie Town Supervisor, Peter Crummey, say that New York City and federal government leadership has failed the asylum seeker.“How would you like to be the folks on the bus shuttled around from all over the country for six to seven months and being promised something without delivering it, and then inserting this broken program on upstate towns and counties, figuring that's the way to lead and take care of these poor folks. It's wrong,” said Crummey.Since being transferred to the Capital Region from New York City about a month ago, these folks were promised housing, medical services and paperwork filing assistance. Millions of Americans will attend parades, fireworks and other Independence Day events on Tuesday, celebrating the courage of the nation’s 18th century patriots who fought for independence from Great Britain and what they considered an unjust government. Those events also will honor the military and those who sacrificed in other conflicts that helped preserve the nation’s freedom over its 247-year history. That is only one version of a “patriot.” Today, the word and its variants have morphed beyond the original meaning. It has become infused in political rhetoric and school curriculums, with varying definitions, while being appropriated by white nationalist groups. Trying to define what a patriot is depends on who is being asked. While the word’s origins come from ancient Greece, its basic meaning in American history is someone who loves his or her country. The original patriots come from the American Revolution, most often associated with figures such as Sam Adams and Benjamin Frankli...
