MANCHESTER, England (AP) — History is not on Pep Guardiola’s side as he tries to lead Manchester City to back-to-back Champions League titles this season. Real Madrid is the only club to retain the trophy in the modern era by winning it three times in a row from 2016-18. “We’re incredibly happy to defend this crown, but this competition doesn’t allow you mistakes,” Guardiola said ahead of City’s opening Group G game against Red Star Belgrade. “The competition gives us a new challenge so (we’ll) at least try.”The European Cup was rebranded as the Champions League in 1992 and no team had successfully defended the trophy until a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Madrid in 2017. The Spanish giant went on to complete a three-peat the following year. Madrid won the first five editions of the trophy, from 1956-60, when the competition was in its former guise as a straight knockout tournament. The European Cup was also only open to the champions of Europe’s leagues, as well...

NEW YORK (AP) — A taped package containing several thousand dollars worth of Fentanyl was discovered inside the New York City day care center where a 1-year-old child died of an opioid overdose last week, according to a court filing. The owner of the day care center, however, maintained she had no knowledge of the presence of the highly-potent opioid, which sickened three other young children, including an 8-month-old girl who tested positive for Fentanyl use. Grei Mendez, a 36-year-old who operated the Divino Niño day care inside a Bronx apartment, pleaded not guilty on Sunday to murder charges in the death of Nicholas Dominici. A man who rented a room inside the Bronx apartment, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, is awaiting arraignment on the same set of charges. The tree house, located off 135th Street, that she has called home for nearly two decades will be torn down after several years of battle with the county. “I didn’t think I’d cry but it’s a lot,” said Chasser. “I didn’t really have a choice, but I got this wonderful guy, Javier, who tells me my life is going to be better after and I’m just going with that.” Javier Alonso is with the UMIEC contracting group hired by Chasse...
